South Shields Local History Group took a different look at history in July when they welcomed the Big River Ukes, to entertain them at their meeting on Monday 20th July, with a time line of music covering nine decades.

Since they formed in 2010, Big River Ukes have earned their reputation as South Shields leading ukulele band. Based at the Customs House, they have appeared there and in the concourse at The Sage Gateshead, as well as performing regularly at charity events and other venues across South Tyneside. They feature soprano and tenor ukuleles, as well as banjulele and bass guitar and their varied repertoire spans the decades of popular music, including the eras of rock and roll and the Swinging 60s. This light-hearted event certainly had everyone travelling happily along memory lane and joining in, and was so popular that we are looking forward to inviting them back to another event in the future.
