Robert Stephenson - his life and achievements, talk by Malcolm Smith
On October 19th South Shields Local History Group is very pleased to welcome back Malcolm Smith for his talk about Robert Stephenson. Last year the members thoroughly enjoyed Malcolm’s talk on George Stephenson and this visit will take us forward with an account of his son Robert’s life and achievements.
Robert Stephenson was probably one of the greatest engineers of his era although he is not as well remembered as his father. Malcolm will describe his considerable contribution to the railways, bridges and all kinds of other engineering developments. He was greatly respected in his time as is shown by such honours as Queen Victoria giving permission for his funeral cortege to pass through Hyde Park and for his burial in the Nave of Westminster Abbey.
The meeting will take place in the theatre, downstairs in the Central Library, between 5pm and 6.50pm. New members are always welcome and visitors too at a charge of £1. For further information please contact the Library Reference Desk on (0191) 424 7864
