History of the Marine School, South Shields, by Alan Johnson
This month South Shields Local History Group are looking forward to member Alan Johnson giving a talk on the History of the Marine School, on Monday 16th May.

Alan was Senior Lecturer in the Electrical Engineering & Radio Department of the college for many years and in 2010 his fascinating book, 'The History of the Marine School' was published to mark its hundredth anniversary. Alan credits his interest in history to his fellow lecturer and friend, Doug McIntyre, who inspired him to write the book.

The talk will cover biographical notes on the School's founder, Dr. Thomas Masterman Winterbottom, the great benefactor of so many local charities during his lifetime and beyond. Alan will go on to trace the development of the Marine School from its beginnings in Ocean Road until the 1960s, when students and mariners travelled from all over the world to study there.

The meeting will be held downstairs in the Central Library theatre from 5pm to 6.45pm and visitors are welcome, with a charge of £1.
