Display, May 2016, 27th and 28th, Old Town Hall, 10.00am - 3.00pm
Local Businesses Past and Present
On May 27th and 28th South Shields Local History Group will be presenting its annual display in the Old Town Hall to mark Local History Month. This year the subject is Local Businesses, Past and Present.
Over the centuries South Shields location, bordered by the river and coast, has benefitted many local businesses both large and small. From the origins of our town, based on fishing and salt panning, to its current success as an international port. From independent boarding houses for visiting seamen to Bed and Breakfast businesses which still pepper our streets. From individuals running all manner of businesses from their homes to successful entrepreneurs with developing companies in large premises. The town once boasted a world famous ship building industry with yards such as Readhead's, Brigham & Cowan's and the Middle Docks which in turn were served by smaller local businesses.
The display pays tribute to a selection of such businesses and the innovative townsfolk behind them. We hope that visitors will enjoy the historic images and old advertisements and share their knowledge and stories about businesses that they have been involved with.
Entry is free and the Old Town Hall will be open from 10am to 3pm on both Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of May.
